Rights of the Accused
The rights of the Accused are a fundamental pillar of the ICC as with any judicial institution. These rights include:
- Right to remain silent and not to be compelled to testify or confess guilt;
- Right to be present during trial;
- Presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt;
- Right to have adequate time and facilities for the preparation of the defense;
- Right to be fully informed of the charges against him or her;
- Right to have a lawyer appointed, free of charge if necessary;
- Right to a speedy trial;
- Right to a public hearing;
- Right to be tried in one’s language and have a free interpreter;
- Right to a public trial;
- Right to examine the witnesses against him or her and to obtain the attendance and examination of witnesses on his or her behalf.
